Originally directed by Harold Prince

Based on a play by Christopher Bond, and adapted for the stage by Hugh Wheeler, Sweeney Todd debuted on Broadway in 1979. One of Sondheim’s greatest and most ambitious scores, the show won eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and has since gone down as a musical theatre and cultural touchstone. It was later adapted for the big screen by Tim Burton, with Johnny Depp in the lead role.

An infamous tale, Sweeney Todd is an unjustly exiled barber who returns to London seeking vengeance against the lecherous judge who framed him and ravaged his young wife. The road to revenge leads Todd to Mrs. Lovett, a resourceful proprietress of a failing pie shop, above which he opens a new barber practice. Mrs. Lovett’s luck sharply shifts when Todd’s thirst for blood inspires the integration of an ingredient into her meat pies that has the people of London lining up, and the carnage has only just begun!

This special School Edition has been masterfully adapted, working directly with Mr. Sondheim, to retain the dark wit and grand scope of the original work, with a few lyric and key changes to facilitate high school productions.

Sweeney Todd School Edition is sure to be the highlight of any summer with memories to last a lifetime.

In Association with NUI Galway

A forward letter from Professor Patrick Lonergan

We at the Centre for Drama and Theatre Studies at NUI Galway are delighted to support this exciting initiative. Teenage Stage Summer Schools will give young people from Ireland and around the world an opportunity to spend an intensive week in the world of musical theatre, working with first-rate teachers and practitioners. Along the way, they will certainly learn a great deal, and will meet new people.

We look forward to contributing to the school in a variety of ways: by advising on the curriculum, by involving our own undergraduate Drama students, by hosting a visit of participants to our campus for a special evening of entertainment – and in other ways too. In doing so, we want to play our part in making Teenage Stage Summer Schools a rigorous, educationally rich and enjoyable immersion in the world of theatre.
